The 27 ‘Pearls Of Wisdom’ below are notes that {+++}Mitch Axelrod took after being grilled at one of Gary Halbert’s seminars. Gary Halbert is a marketing legend and some of his students were guys like Joe Polish, Eben Pegan, Yanik Silver and many other popular marketers.

Here Are 27 “Pearls Of Wisdom”
I Dug Up Last Weekend:

1. Don’t worry about improving your image. Improve your substance. The world is starved for substance. Most people are working on image. Few work to improve substance. Those who do will stand head and shoulders above the rest.

2. Fail fast. Drop losing projects immediately. After trying to find a solution to a marketing problem which simply didn’t exist, Gary Halbert wrote three words on the white board which most of us were thinking in our heads:

Drop This Project!

It’s not easy to let go of things we’re emotionally attached to, but it’s necessary to move on.

3. Most people are self-absorbed. Appeal to their selfish side. Forget your point of view. It doesn’t matter. If you want to sell Johnny Jones what Johnny Jones buys… you MUST see Johnny Jones through Johnny Jones’ eyes. What does he want more than anything?

4. Gary said, “If I found the cure for AIDS, everyone would get it. How much money I make would not be an issue. When you discover something important enough, the goal is to make sure everyone who wants or needs it can get it. Shift attention from how much can you make to how many people can you help. The money will come.”

5. NOTHING is risk-free. LIFE is not risk-free. You’re a heartbeat away from a Christopher Reeves moment. If you can’t accept risk, you are living on the wrong planet. What risk can you take which might alter the quality of life as you know it?

6. Hire experts. Don’t try to do everything yourself. Especially when it comes to the most important parts, including copywriting and crafting your sales message. Don’t spend a fortune on the unimportant things, then economize on the pivotal items. Know when to bring in the experts.

7. Outspend the other guys. Many businesses do things on the cheap. Shoestringing and bootstrapping are successful strategies when money is tight. When money is there, spend it. A business campaign can rise or fall based on the money behind it. Don’t hesitate to invest money, especially on the important things. If you don’t have it, find someone who does and share the bounty. 100% of nothing is still nothing!

8. You don’t want to sell just one million books (widgets, etc.). You want anyone who wants what you have to be able to buy it. Don’t set arbitrary limits. Find a way for everyone who wants what you have to get it. It will enrich you in the process.

9. Don’t become a student of products… but… do become a student of markets. Know your markets better than you know your products. If you fall in love with your product, it will blind you to reality. Fall in love with markets. If there isn’t a market, reconsider or drop the product. Use the SRDS (Standard Rates and Data Service directory) to find your buyers (www.srds.com). It’s not a cheap resource, but it’s vital if you plan to reach a pool of hungry fish.

10. Don’t do LMS… (“Lesser Mortal Shit”) [a Halbertism]. Delegate everything except your highest value work. If you run out of highest value work, do the next most valuable work. Don’t do $10/hour work or you won’t ever reach your highest and best value.

11. Two things will get a person’s attention and interest: Showmanship and the “Reason Why”. To get the attention of the person you’re after, a little theatre will go a long way. Be creative. If you’ve got 20 big fish to catch, don’t send a letter… but… do send a courier. Gain their interest with a powerful “reason why”. Why would they… why SHOULD they… give you their time and attention? What’s the most compelling “reason why” you can give which satisfies their self-interest? If you don’t know, ask your buyers.

12. Understand the Triangle of Marketing… #3 is the copy, #2 is the message, and #1 is the audience. Make sure you have the right/best/hungriest/rabid audience, or your message and copy won’t ever get seen, heard or read. A mediocre message to a great audience will always do better than a great message to a mediocre audience. Know your audience, hone your message, and don’t scrimp on copy. Like an interesting story, good copy gets read.

13. Don’t care about what ANYONE thinks. How often do we hesitate and delay because of what others might think? We thwart our success and happiness worrying about what other people think. We don’t regret the shots we do take, even when they don’t work out. We do regret most of the shots we don’t take. Follow the real desires which lurk deep in your heart. Don’t worry about what others think.

14. Tell your story. A powerful story creates an emotional link. I call this the “E-Link”. John Carlton, one of the world’s highest-paid copywriters, says personality is missing in most marketing messages. He suggests we “pinch-them-in-the-butt” and tap the passionate “sweet spot”. Tell a story. Connect it to what the person can DO (results, accomplishments), and how the person will FEEL (the strongest E-Link). What story can/will you tell?

15. Gary wrote on the board…

16. “Gun-to-the-head-thinking” can get you out of a jam or tough time. If someone had a gun to your head, and to save your life you had to craft the best message you could, what would you say?

17. There’s too much bad news. We can’t hear the voices of light. Cats find the sun spots. They seek the patches of light. (Did you catch that? That’s where the name of the seminar came from… “Patches of Light” seminar.) How can you be a source of light?

18. Speak… “from down below.” If you want your credibility to soar, don’t speak from your mouth; speak from your pelvis. Imagine your entire chest cavity as one big voice box. Speak “from down below”… and you will create a stronger, more powerful presence. (Thank you, Burt Dubin for this little-known sage advice used by opera singers to get the most from their precious instrument.) [Gary's Note: I have no recollection of Burt's statement.]

19. You’re NOT in the marketing business. You’re in the ARITHMETIC business. If your arithmetic doesn’t add up, you won’t have a business for very long. Start counting.

20. You want to sell your products and services to “addicts” – profound, irrational, passionate, rabid, insane people who buy frequently and spend a lot. That’s your IDEAL buyer. Where are they? How can you reach them? What will you say to them?

21. 10,000 hours… that’s how long it takes to become really good at something. That’s 2,000 hours per year for five years. It can take doctors and other professionals twice that long (10 years), and most self-made millionaires take four times that long (that’s right, 20 years is the average time it takes for self-made millionaires to achieve “overnight” success). You can’t invest a few hours in something and expect to become an expert. There are many self-proclaimed “pseudo-gurus” who emerge after one or two successes and claim expert status. Experts hone their chops over time. What’s your expertise? Hone it, refine it and continuously improve it.

22. The “instant-gratification-society” claims millions of lives each year who fall for the Success BS that the road to success, fame and fortune is quick, easy, painless and risk-free.

23. Entertainers, artists and musicians practice 10,000 hours to hone their chops, most of it in solitude and anonymity. Entrepreneurs suffer ups and downs, ins and outs of all kinds over many years before they hit their stride and achieve consistent and lasting success.

24. There are no shortcuts. Then again, why should there be? The journey, the process itself is the reward. The achievement of a goal or objective is icing on the cake. The real payoffs are what we learn, how we grow, who we meet and how much we pass on to others.

25. If we polish up and internalize these pearls of wisdom, especially those which challenge our existing boundaries and beliefs, the payoff can be priceless.

26. If we seek out and embrace critics, we will learn things we could not know otherwise. It’s courageous to listen to the truth, especially when it’s unpleasant. Seek the truth and embrace it. Don’t run from it or hide from it. The truth WILL set you free.

27. Things I disagree with most can often be the truth which does me the most good. Beware of what you defend, protect and reject. It just might be a life-changing gift in disguise.

Good Karma Boomerang Case Study

As you guys know, I’m going to listen to what my members told me and I’m going to change this site more into a group coaching platform including real life case studies.

I’m tired all all the same IM stuff out there and I’m trying to be different and to make a name for myself by providing information that other don’t share or charge thousands for.

In this case study I’m going to reveal my plan to you how I’m going to re-build the relationship with my list again. At the same time I’m going to let them know about my new site/launch, but in a cool way.

This is a real life case study, so I have absolutely no clue how it’s going to turn out, and that’s the interesting part .

People always just talk about their great successes and they wouldn’t talk about where they failed. Not here. If it works out, you can go ahead and implement the same strategy. If not, you know what not to do.

At the end of the day it’s going to be great anyway, because I’ll provide value and that’s always good.

[NBS-IMS] Update

As I told you guys, I’m not going to give new members access to all the WSO’s. I’m working on creating a sales funnel (I’ll teach more about that) and rather then creating a new offer from scratch, I rather pack some of my WSO’s together and offer them as an upsell. That saves me time and energy now and I can create another offer later on. Just letting you know what I’m up to.

Anyway, some of you guys didn’t really like the idea of downloading all the stuff. What I’m going to do is that I’m going to have a hidden link for you guys where you can still access the members page. This way you have all the time to download the WSO or view them.

Obviously, to have access to them forever, you should download them sooner or later.

Regarding the site, I’ll have new content each Monday and then a Q&A session on Saturday. I will also have live case studies as I told you in the first tele-seminar.

In the last couple of weeks I received a lot of emails, pm’s and comments from people asking me for mentoring. It’s quite obvious that my subscribers want this the most, direct access to me and a chance to have me as mentor and to hold you guys accountable.

So far I haven’t offered any coaching at all. I would love to coach as many people as possible but the truth is that it’s hard to do. Coaching basically means that you change time for money. The problem with that is that you don’t create a business doing that, you basically work in your business rather than on your business.

On the other hand I would love to interact more with you guys and give back to the market what it is asking for, so I was thinking how I could do that.

Again, I enjoyed the first tele-seminar so much that I thought that this would be a great way to offer direct access to me in a way that it’s affordable for everybody. Having a coaching-platform where I provide content on a regular basis plus Q&A calls and ‘Speed Coaching Sessions’ allows me to help a lot of people while I still have time to work on my business.

That’s exactly why I’m going to revamp this blog into a private coaching/content platform.

In the past I tried to run [NBS-IMS] as my free blog and as a paid membership site at the same time. That didn’t work out that well and often created a dilemma for me.

After the next 7 days, this site is for Members Only! All the real killer content that I’m going to provide is for your eyes only. There won’t be posts that I make viewable for others or anything like that. It’s going to be a private coaching-platform for you guys only, period.

It’s not going to be about WSO’s anymore either. Except one or two exceptions (offered as bonus), new members won’t have access to my WSO’s. So if you are a member just to get some WSO’s for free, then this might not be the right site for you anymore.

And please don’t get this wrong. Some might think I’m crazy telling people to leave my site but you must understand why I’m doing this. In business, you will sooner or later understand that there’s something like the perfect customer out there.

With that I don’t just mean the guy who’s paying you the most, I actually mean the customer that you enjoy dealing with. The guys that don’t give you headaches, the guys that really appreciate what you do for them, the guys that hardly complain and that you have a great relationship with. That’s what I call the perfect customer.

For me, that’s people who follow me and join my sites because they like me, my style and more importantly appreciate what I do. It’s the person that really wants to change their life.

That’s exactly the kind of person that I want as a member, that’s the person that I can help most and that I enjoy working with. If you are that person, then I’m looking forward to working with you.

If you just joined to get WSO’s for free in order to satisfy your hunger for more information, without actually doing anything, then I think it’s better if you move on. There won’t be free WSO’s anymore, just killer no BS content and mentoring.

Don’t get me wrong, members will still get major discounts on everything I put out, but I need to make clear that this site won’t be about getting free WSO’s. It will be about really helping struggling marketers, about giving you guys direction, holding you accountable and giving you access to me.

For my regular subscribers I’m going to create a new blog where I talk about Internet Marketing. That keeps everything clean and it makes it easier for me to run my business. This way I have the private site with Real Life kick-butt content for you guys only and I’ll have a free blog where I talk about IM in general, available for everybody.

New Content:

Good Karma & Launch Case Study

One important part of the new platform is case studies and I have the first case study for you already.

If you want to get paid forever you will have to build a list and more importantly build and keep a great relationship with your list. The best way to do that is to provide massive value.

From now on I’m going to refer to that as building ‘Good Karma’.

We all have a ‘Good Karma’ bank account with our list or customers and when we pitch something the Good Karma decreases. Conversely, when we provide value, it goes up.

The secret to success with your list is to build good karma while still getting paid, this way everybody wins.

I haven’t done that much of a great job with my list regarding that topic and I’m going to work on my Good Karma points. At the same time, I want to get people to join my new coaching-platform next Monday.

For you as a member, this is going to be a interesting case study and a chance for you to learn from it. If it works out, you’ll want to implement it, if not, you know what not to do.

So tomorrow I’m going to go into detail, showing you my exact plan. Then, on the weekend we’re going to have our next coaching call.

Hey all,

The last 14 days were pretty tough for me regarding my motivation and online business. Everything started with a WSO about Membership Sites that people didn’t really dig. I showed in detail, how anybody can set up a fully functioning membership site overnight, information that I wish I had when I wanted to start a membership site, let alone the fact that other marketers are charging up to $497 (!) for similar information.

Anyway, that just shows me again that it’s all about marketing. You can have the best product in the world and nobody will buy it if you don’t market it well or if you market it to the wrong people. On the other hand, there’s a lot of mediocre products out there and people happily pay top dollar for them because the vendor is marketing it very well.

Action: I’m going to re-launch the WSO with a different sales letter and I’ll try different price points until I find the one that works. Now that I have the content anyway, I can use it for all kinds of projects. Once I create a killer Clickbank product, I can use the content as a lead magnet, upsell or bonus.

Lesson: If something similar happens to you, don’t give up and don’t dump your product. I had several WSO’s that started slow and I was able to turn them around. Also make sure to re-use the content.

Videos Down

After the launch of the first WSO I decided to update my video software because of great new features in the new version. I was thinking that I should contact the vendor and let them do the update. Most of the time when I try to do something technical myself, something gets messed up.

Anyway, I followed the instructions and everything looked great within the interface. Later on, when I actually checked one of my blogs, I noticed that all my videos are down. I tried to fix the problem myself (big mistake) and the result was that I overwrote all my videos with the latest file that I uploaded.

So all my videos on my blogs weren’t working and within my video server I had only one vide. All other videos were overwritten and it didn’t matter which one I clicked on, it would always display only the last video that I uploaded.

It took the tech support 4 days (easter weekend) to fix the problem. Not because it was tricky or anything like that. The first assistant just didn’t understand what my problem was and once the support ticket got escalated to the support manager, it was fixed within 15 minutes.

Turns out that the problem was that I never updated the first version that I bought. Therefore, it still had an old bug and once I tried to upgrade from the oldest version to the brand new version, the bug took over so to speak.

Lesson: Next time when I have to make an update that involves more than just a click, I rather pay somebody to do it. The truth is that I can’t stand technical issues and my time is better spent doing other things. This will save me an awful lot of headache and time.

Do what you do best, hire others to do the rest!

The Truth About The IM Niche

Once I got that problem fixed, I launched another WSO about Productivity. Again, people didn’t really get it. I already know that this niche is all about numbers and crazy claims. People want to hear that they will be able to make thousands of dollars within minutes after consuming a product. This is what the Internet Marketing niche is hungry for, period.

I ignored all of this and I thought that I would create a product that can actually help struggling marketers with the biggest problem out there, which is that we all get distracted. We also suffer from information overload and can’t take action consistently.

So I created a product to solve these issues. Sure enough, people pretty much ignored it. It’s ironic, throw crazy numbers around you and people go bananas and buy like crazy. Create something really valuable without any hype at all, and chances are that you won’t sell anything.

There are many things that come into play of course, but from experience I can tell you that you’ll have a hard time selling in this niche if you don’t use a lot of hype and numbers. Second time that I ignored that and both times I had to learn it the hard way.

Lesson: The Internet Marketing crowd is hungry for crazy claims and hype, chasing the myth that there’s a magic method out there that will generate a lot of money without a lot of work. Sell them that dream and you’ll get rich. Ignore their hunger for hype and you’ll fight an uphill battle. The problem is, what do you do if you get tired of using hype but you want to sell great products that can actually help people?

Everything Is Down

After my last WSO launch I was motivated to make some great changes to this membership site. Launching the affiliate program, posting a sales video and other ideas were on the schedule. The day that I wanted to make all these changes I noticed that my site was down. I checked my other websites and they ALL were down.

This means that members couldn’t access the membership site and that customers couldn’t access there products after paying for them, let alone the sites that were making me passive income through affiliate marketing. I got a lot of emails and private messages from unhappy customers and all I could tell them was the truth. Fortunately most of them understood my situation.

If somebody tried to visit one of my sites, they would only see an error message regarding WordPress default widgets. I had no clue what that meant, so I contacted Hostgator. They have an awesome 24/7 live support and I was told that my sites probably got hacked.

They escalated the ticket to the security department for further investigations and I had to wait for an email from them. In the meantime I contacted a friend that knows a lot about PHP and he was able to get my membership site online again.

At the same time we had guests from Ecuador staying with us for 7 days and I had to take care of them most of the time because my girlfriend was working. Anyway, I saw my site online again and that was good enough for me.

Unfortunately the issue wasn’t solved yet, not at all. Once I got back home after a couple of hours, I tried to access one of my sites. I couldn’t. There was a new error message. I checked all my other sites and they all had this issue. So the problem wasn’t fixed. Yes the sites were online, but neither I nor my customers could access any of the content.

Yesterday, two days later, I finally heard back from the Hostgator security team and they fixed the issue. The problem (supposeldy) was that my passwords got compromised and this allowed hackers to modify the PHP code in different places like the default widgets and within the theme for example. The tech support fixed the problem for me and since yesterday my sites are up and running again.

I know that most of you also use WordPress, so here are some tips that can help you not to get in the same situation.

Updates:

Do always updgrade to the newest version of WordPress as soon as it’s available. I didn’t do that. If you ignore the upgrades, you open the door for hackers to access your blog. I now use a plug in to automatically update my blogs, you can download it HERE!

Also make sure that you always update your plug-ins and that you delete the ones that you don’t use.

WP Security Scan:

This is a plug in that helps you to make your blog safer. It first scans your blog for security issues and it will then tell you what you should fix. It also automatically takes care of some other things that makes it harder for hackers to access your blog, like hiding the version you are using and other useful things.

Strong Passwords and a Different User Name:

Make sure that you use strong passwords and that you don’t use ‘admin’ as user name. Hello123 isn’t a strong password. You should use lower and upper cases, numbers and other characters. Something like kiEp(@m3:^Ph is considered a strong password.

Antivirus Program:

That’s a must. Get a good anti virus program in order to keep your computer clean. It doesn’t make any sense to use super strong passwords if you have spy ware on your computer that is recording all the passwords that you use just to send them to a hacker.

I personally have been using Bitdefender for 2 months now and I’m very happy with it. Supposedly it’s one of the best anti virus programs and at the same time it’s very inexpensive.

Lesson: Keep everything up to date. One of the easiest ways for hackers to access your site is if you don’t upgrade your tools to the newest version. WordPress, FTP software, Internet browser or whatever it is, make sure that you upgrade to the new versions once they are released.

Don’t get me wrong, if somebody wants to harm your site and they know what they’re doing, they will find a way. But implementing these strategies will make it harder for them and don’t forget that hackers are lazy too. They might rather choose sites that have obvious weaknesses caused by not being up to date or using weak passwords.

Down Again

Once Hostgator fixed the problem, I was happy and motivated to get going again. The post that you are reading right now, was supposed to go live last week. Just before posting I checked my members area again and noticed that my videos are down again!

Turns out that Hostgator fixed the problem with the hack, but their fix also influenced my videos. Now I had to contact the Video support again. Very frustrating. 48 hours later all my videos are online again.

Today is the first day that everything seems to be working fine. Hallelujah!

Conclusion

All this happened within 14 days and it was a very frustrating time because most of it was out of my control and it felt like the bad news wouldn’t stop. When it rains, it pours. Fortunately I’m aware of this and I knew that life is a constant up and down.

Things like this are testing your determination and character. You can either complain all day long and at some point give up, or you push through it, make the best out of it and understand that the better times are just around the corner.

I decided to go for the latter. I took care of my guests and I had the patience to wait for the support team to fix the problem. Yes I got very frustrated sitting on the computer not being able to do anything at all and and receiving all the emails and private messages from upset customers, but I stayed calm and told them the truth.

I then stayed away from the computer as much as I could because it would only frustrate me more. I’ve spent the time with my guests and made sure that they were having a good time, checking my emails just once in a while to see if I got news from the tech support.

As of right now, everything seems to be working and I’m motivated to get going again.

If you get into a similar situation, keep in mind that life is a constant up and down. If soemthing doesn’t kill you, it’ll make you stronger and also keep in mind that you have to overcome obstacles on the road to success.

If success was easy to achieve, everybody would be successful.

12. I prioritize the todo-lists
13. I complete the todo-lists
14. my work area is neat tidy
15. I put things back in their proper place
16. I handle each item only once
17. I avoid procrastination
18. I deal with long-winded telephone calls effectively
19. my filing system is up-to-date
20. I am using my time to the fullest

Add the points and see where you are:

80-100: Perfect, stop reading now

60-80: Reasonable, just a few challenges, maybe not just using a prioritized lists?

40-60: Need to do some work. What’s the main issue? Others impact you?

sub 40: Slipping, underperforming, not at full potential!

Hey all,

I updated my video server yesterday (I knew something would go wrong:) ) and now all videos are
down.

I contacted the support team and I’m still waiting for a reply.

If they can’t fix the issue, I’ll have to re-install the software and upload each single video again to my server and then take the embed code and paste each video on my site. This would be an incredible pain in the neck, so I hope they can show me how to fix it.

I’m on it, just waiting for their response. This is very frustrating and I’ve learned my lesson, I’m not going to deal with technical stuff anymore as I don’t like it anyway.

Do what you do the best, hire others to do the rest.

I’ll keep you up to date.

In the video, when I say 9 minutes, I meant 90 minutes.

This is a little personal but I still decided to share the following e-mail with you guys. You can check everything that I wrote when I did this exercise. (unedited!)

You will see how powerful it is to really know what you want. Clarity is power and only if you are clear about what you really want, you’ll have the drive and desire to take massive action and to get things done.

Here are some of the goals that I had last year in March:

To quit my day job (achieved)
To make money teaching IM to newbies (achieved)
To have a list of 3000 subscribers (achieved)
To live on the beach and to start the day with something I enjoy (achieved)
To make 10k a month (achieved, but not consistently)

It really is scary that all these became reality. I actually did not end up having a mentor (unfortunately) but I still made it happen and the only reason for that is that I knew exactly what I want, therefore I had a reason to get things done and to take massive action.

Answering this questions is super important, I can’t stress this enough. Knowing exactly what you want in life will allow your subconsciousness and your brain to find a way to make it happen.

If you don’t even know what you actually want in life, why the heck would you work to get it right?

Do this exercise, ask yourself these questions and take 90 minutes out of your busy day!

What’s my current situation?
What’s my desired future reality?
What needs to happen to move from one to the other?

For me, doing this exercise made all the difference!
