The wrong mindset and lack of focus is in my opinion the main reason why so many people fail. How can you expect anybody to succeed if they aren’t able to focus on their project or if they have a negative mindset in the first place?
I still have trouble to always focus, I still get distracted and there are days when my mindset isn’t where it should be. The difference is that I’m working on that every day, trying to be on track and motivated. And the more I try, the better I get.
I would like to share with you what truly works for me. There were a few ideas/methods that I’ve learned about and they have really had a great impact on my productivity and motivation and therefore results. They really helped me and that’s why I want to share them with you. Implement this handful of strategies and it will transform your productivity.
Strategy Number One: Write a short list of the 3 most important things or tasks that would have the most impact on your business or project. The stuff that really helps you grow, has the highest impact or really adds to your bottom line.
Remind yourself of these most important tasks every time BEFORE you even start your computer, seriously. Do not start your computer before writing down what you are going to work on. Don’t open up your mail account, Facebook or ICQ. Specify the most important tasks (maximum 3, better just one) and then ask yourself the following question every 15 to 30 minutes:
1. Am I doing one of these tasks right now?
If yes, awesome – keep going.
If no, STOP DOING whatever you are doing and get back to working on your most important task. No excuses!
This tip alone can have a huge impact on your business or project. Do this consistently and you will get so much done you won’t believe it. More importantly you are going to focus on the most important stuff.
No browsing forums, no reading sales letters, no reading Twitter messages – pure focus on what’s important.
Here is what your list could look like for this course:
1. Keyword Research
2. Create Content
3. Build Backlinks
Strategy 2 – Achieving more by doing Less
On a very expensive Seminar for entrepreneurs they asked the crowd to raise their hand if they were working at their maximum (in terms of hours and invested energy) in the last couple of months in order to make their business grow. All hands were up!
Then they asked them to raise their hands if they think that the demand is even going to get bigger and more complex in the next couple of months and years. Everybody raised their hands again.
The last question was to raise their hands if they think that their capacity to handle this higher demand will increase as the demand increases. A few raised their hands.
The truth is that the capacity won’t grow exponentially with the demand! There are only so many hours in a day. There is only so much that you can handle in the time that you have, there is only so much energy you can invest. Your capacity is limited, the demands seem to become infinite.
The solution is to find a way to get more done, in less time and if possible on a higher level of engagement.
I know it sounds weird but you can achieve that by doing less and taking more breaks, by taking time for renewal, switching channels, unplugging. What do we intuitively do when we have more work on your table? We work harder, we keep pushing and pushing. This will lead to a burn out and you won’t have time for the nice things in life.
I would spend 6 hours in front of the computer ‘working’ on my sites just to ask myself at the end of the session: “What did I actually do the last couple of hours?” I answered a lot of mails, I checked many posts, but what was that stuff all about? Why do I feel like I haven’t achieved anything?
The solution to this, as counter-intuitive as it might sound is taking breaks. We are not meant to work for many consistent hours on a very high level of focus and engagement. We are not computers. We need breaks and recovery. And we tend to forget that way too often.
According to this high level seminar it’s best to work for 90 minutes, considering that you are highly focused. You should then take a break of at least 90 minutes in order to renew. And a break doesn’t mean answering e-mails or browsing forums. You need to completely change channels!
Running, working out, spending time with your family, reading a good book, watching a great movie, taking a nap – these kind of things.
Taking these breaks will not only allow you to get more things done on a higher level of engagement, it will also give you a life! You will have time to run, read, enjoy and spend time with your family.
I’ve tested this strategy and I was blown away by the results. Seriously. This has such a huge impact on my life. I couldn’t believe how much I can get done in 90 minutes if I’m fresh and focused. After a session I relax and do something completely different in order to get renewal.
I then go ahead and start a new session, fresh and focused. So by only doing two working sessions I would get some much done it’s incredible. I mean think about it, we are talking about 3hours of extremely highly focused action. I before used to sit on my computer for 6 hours wondering why I can’t get anything done and why I’m still so exhausted.
I now know the answer, and so do you. It cost our brain a lot to highly focus on only one thing over a longer period of time, that’s why we have to recover.
Strategy 3 – Surround Yourself with Success
I’ve read in so many books that we need to surround ourselves with driven and successful people in order to get into the same mindset. I’m here in the States for two years now and I have a handful of friends, but they do not necessarily fit this category.
So what I started to do is to read, watch or listen to something about success on a daily basis. And I do that whenever I get a chance to. I read when I go to the beach, when I ride the bus and I read at work when I have nothing else to do. I listen to audio tapes from Tony Robbins and other successful people while as often as I can. I get these audio cd’s from the library. I also bought some home study courses on Ebay. Instead of $2,000 dollars I got them there for $350.
I have done this each and every day for two and a half weeks now and I can’t tell you how much this motivates and drives me. I mean, I just can’t help but work on my projects and taking action when I listen to super successful people every day. They tell me how to overcome my fears and that I have to take action in order to succeed. Every day I learn a little bit about how to be successful, what separates the follower and the leader, what pushes you to the next level, what keeps you hungry.
This is so powerful and I wholeheartedly wish that you do the same. I mean think about it, if you fill you head with positive and success driven thoughts each and every day, there is nothing left but to be motivated and thrilled to finally get things done.
It won’t cost you a fortune, I ordered most of the books on Amazon and the courses on Ebay. I tried to only get the best of the best, I really did my homework.
Here are the books that I ordered, they might help you as much as they helped me:
‘The Go Giver’ by Bob Burg and John David Mann
‘Getting everything you can out of all you’ve got’ by Jay Abraham
‘Over the top’ by Zig Zagler
‘The E-Myth’ by Michael E. Gerber
‘The magic of thinking big’ by David J. Shwartz
‘The richest man in Babylon’ by George S. Clason
‘Influence’ by Robert B. Cialdini
‘Unlimited Power’ by Anthony Robbins
‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ by Rober Kiyosaki
‘It’s easier than you think’ by Sylvia Borstein
Ready, Aim, Fire by Michael Masterson
The 4 Hour Workweek by Tim Farris
Action Steps:
Write down the 3 most important tasks that you want to get done before you start your computer. (This is the most powerful tip that I can give you)
Have a note beside your computer with the following question on it: Am I’m working on one of these tasks right now? If not, stop what you do and get back to your tasks.
Work for 90 minutes on your most important task, then take a break and do something completely different, something that you enjoy.Your mind is now ready for the next session!
Read, watch or listen to anything regarding Success or Motivation on a daily basis. Even if it’s just watching a short Youtube Video.
I do these things on a daily basis and they work. These steps took me from buying product after product and not taking action to Creating my own products and taking massive action.
Here are a couple of Videos to get you on the right track
– you should watch them in full screen mode.
